Overview

Family Councils Ontario is a provincial organization that supports families and caregivers in establishing and sustaining strong family councils. Their website is a critical touchpoint for guidance, education, and community connection.

Problem

Family Councils Ontario’s online presence had not been meaningfully updated in over a decade. The site suffered from outdated navigation, accessibility barriers, and fragmented content, making it difficult for users to find reliable information. The brand colours also did not meet modern accessibility contrast standards, and there was no dependable digital pathway for donations—limiting the organization’s ability to grow and sustain its work.

Solution

I led a full website refresh focused on clarity, accessibility, and long-term usability. This included:

  • Reworking information architecture and navigation to support diverse user needs

  • Refreshing brand colours to meet WCAG contrast standards while staying true to the existing visual identity

  • Designing a dedicated resource library for evergreen content such as guides, council materials, and educational resources

  • Introducing a structured events calendar and news section to improve engagement and transparency

  • Highlighting clear, accessible pathways for giving to support the organization’s sustainability

Impact

The impact was immediate and strongly felt within the community. Families and caregivers now have a clear, accessible “north star” for navigating the process of starting and maintaining a family council. The improved structure, accessibility, and content strategy significantly enhanced trust, usability, and engagement—while the introduction of donation pathways strengthened the organization’s long-term viability.
